DSJV began phasing out paid subscriptions
beginning September 1, 2004 to make the paper free to entire Jewish
communities our coverage area.
Deep South Jewish Voice began in 1990 as
The Southern Shofar, a publication our editor started right out of
college as a way to link the small Jewish communities of Alabama. In
1999, the paper underwent a massive design change including changing its
name to Deep South Jewish Voice, and included coverage of Mississippi.
In late 2003, DSJV included the communities of the Florida panhandle into
its coverage area. In 2006, we reached an agreement with the
Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans to serve as the
Louisiana Jewish newspaper.
What began as a one-person operation in a
basement is now five full-time friends/co-workers in a downtown Birmingham
office, with a satellite office in the Jewish Community Campus in
Metairie. We've come pretty far.
Below is a
letter our editor sent out in 2004 announcing our new initiative:
The philosophy of DSJV has always been to
link the Jewish communities of the Deep South, to tell you the fascinating
stories of one another, and to document and preserve the news of events
large and small, all a part of the rich culture of Southern Jewry.
We've been flattered with your response.
Not only has the paper received the ultimate compliment - your
subscriptions - but also the support of the Jewish and general community
in making the paper viable through advertising.
In the Spring of 2004, we were approached
by someone in South Alabama who wondered what it would cost to 'sponsor'
paid subscriptions of the DSJV for his region. This got us thinking
- what if we were able to pay for subscriptions for the entire Jewish
communities in our coverage areas of Alabama, Mississippi, and NW Florida
(and now, Louisiana) through advertising income alone?
Well, we're going to try it.
Starting with the 2004 High Holiday issue,
we're sending the paper to every Jewish household in our coverage area.
If you're a member of the Jewish community in the coverage area and not
receiving the paper, let us know by mailing your name and full address here.
If you're not in our region (yes that means you, Georgia!), you can still
subscribe by clicking the 'subscribe' button at the right of this page for
a one year subscription rate of $25.
We really look forward to hearing from you
and beginning this chapter in our publication's history.
Here's to y'all.
